This episode was recorded in August of 2024 and our special guest, Kevin Kooistra passed away in December 2024. We are honored to have had this conversation with him and to share it with you. We hope that you are inspired by Kevin’s story.
On this episode Kevin shares his journey to Montana from New Jersey, seeing mountains for the first time, Montana snipe hunting, and working in Yellowstone National Park. He talks about being an archaeologist and the types of items he found on digs. He shares about being a cultural anthropologist where then he was a Ethnographic Consultations working with elders in 12 western tribes.
We talk about his “fever for learning” something you hear throughout the episode. We discuss the journey that led him back to Montana, starting out as the Community Historian at the Western Heritage and transition to Executive Director. Kevin talks about what they do at the Western Heritage Center and said, “What we do at the museum is make people feel more at home. We take people, give them the maps of the past to get them to the present.”

Today we’re sitting down with Jake MacKenzie, one of the first listeners of The Vault. As he says he’s our “our longtime listener, first time caller.” Jake spent his first few years in Montana going to school at Montana State University transitioning to Rocky Mountain College in Billings where he finished his bachelor’s degree in business master’s in accountancy. While at Rocky he works as an RA, meets his wife, and then begins volunteering at the Art House Cinema & Pub. A little later he transitions from volunteer to Operations Manager at Art House.
Today we sit down with Jake to discuss topics ranging from managing a Theater during COVID, working in the non-profit arts world, being part of a capital campaign and theater remodel, and the process of what goes into showing movies and their selection process of what’s shown at the Babcock and Art House. We also discuss community, how they engage with other organizations, unique events they’ve hosted at their theaters and the new unique experiences Art House, with the completion of phase two offers the community.

One of the most recent projects being the revitalization of the Montana Bank Building in to the new home of BSED and Rock31 in the heart of Billings – where this very podcast is recorded. Steve shares the value behind creating a central place for entrepreneurs to collaborate with other entrepreneurs while launching their business and seeing their dreams come to life.

It all started in a small repair shop when Howard Wood needed to solve a problem while working on engines that sparked an invention that quickly ignited a successful company that works with consumers all over the globe. Bryan paints the picture of his grandfather creating this product, moving a general store (yes, the whole building) over 10 miles to Wolf Point, Montana, and purchasing surplus World War 2 equipment to create the first manufacturing facility.
Fast forward through years of growth, evolvement, and relocation, Wood’s Powr-Grip now operates out of Laurel, Montana just west of Billings. The company continues to face new opportunities that challenge them to be innovative and further develop their product to meet the ever-changing industries it serves. Kris explains her journey from doing at-home facials with oatmeal, incense, and Enya to creating the first all-inclusive, luxurious day spa and salon in Billings, and later opening a “gifts for your girlfriends” boutique. Throughout the episode Kris shares different ways she listens to her employees, customers, clients, and the community to continuously grow and improve her businesses. Her businesses are about more than just the business, they are about the people and the experiences they have.
